Do you know what the PLL chip inside the TUV1236D is?
If it's a common TUA603x chip, then sending 5 bytes is _not_ the correct
protocol for setting the auxillary byte.
The auxillary byte lets you control the AGC take over point settings. This
does make a difference. I can get a better SNR by adjusting the TOP
settings with my DTT7612 tuner. See:

That was for for cable. I see the same thing now that I'm using an
antenna.
Setting the agc top value does not need to be done on every tune. It only
need be done when the device is opened to initialize it. The DVB tuner
object doesn't have an initialize callback, but AFAIK the plan is to add
one for just this purpose.
