Silently printing a PDF to a network printer

I have searched archives and Net for a solution to this but have had no luck.

It seems the ability to send a PDF to a network printer from within a java app is some sort of holy grail right now.

Does anyone have an elegant solution that can successfully send a PDF to a network printer? If so, how did you do it?

I have seen a few apps available for purchase, but these all seem to cost big bucks (eg $1000+ USD per CPU+).

I have also seen the occassional 'hack' solution that involves running command line programs to execute OS specific printing functions but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.
Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
