Any plans to update kernel-utils for newer smartmontools

OK, it works only if I modify /etc/smartd.conf to use the -d ata option. 
Thanks.  I was just thrown by your comment that things work with "stock
tools and kernels", assuming it meant "works out of the box without
tweaking".
